Average daytime temperatures vary from 28 degrees in January to 84.5 degrees in July. Throughout the state summer nights are generally cool and pleasant. Temperatures decrease with altitude, and hot weather is unknown above 4,000 ft. Snowfall is not unknown any month of the year in the central part of Montana, but is quite rare in July and August. Stevensville is a town in Ravalli County, Montana. The population was 1,553 at the 2000 census. Flanked by the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains, the small, historic town in the Bitterroot Valley offers beautiful views, outdoor recreation and watchable wildlife. The Bitterroot Mountain Range, just west of Stevensville, is the longest single mountain range in the Rocky Mountains. Florence also in Ravalli County, Montana is a smaller community. As of the 2000 census, there were 901 people, 323 households, and 266 families residing in Florence. Darby is smaller with 710 people, 279 households, and 176 families residing in the town. Missoula city is the county seat of Missoula County in western Montana. The population was 57,053 at the 2000 census, and the estimated population is 64,081, as of July 2006. As of the United States 2000 Census the population of the Missoula Metropolitan Area is 95,802, making it the second-largest city and metropolitan area in Montana.
